Rolf Julius
Empty Music and Sound Cooking (1988)
Flower pots, ash, audio equipment, glass
1414 Monterey, 3rd floor and hallways
Empty Music Tiny speakers, covered with panes of glass, perch like insects on the walls and dot the floor. Near a window, the sky is reflected in the glass covering the small speakers. Now and then, there is a pause in the chirping, tinkling, and pulsing sounds. Just enough to heighten your sense of hearing so that you feel the music as a palpable presence in the room.
Sound Cooking In the hallways, gurgles rise from flower pots fitted with speakers which are covered with ash. Up a flight of stairs, a deep drone rises intermittently from more flower pots.
In an intimate performance on the fifth floor at 500 Sampsonia Way, sunlight fell through the windows onto solar panels scattered on the floor that powered tape players. Moving his hands across the solar panels, Julius manipulated the recording, modulating the sounds by interrupting the power source. Speakers, sometimes covered with paper and sticks, vibrated as they played.
